Entering Qatar for the grand prix
Visa free entry, the QAR 100 visa on arrival, Hayya for everyone else, the passport rule two official sources disagree on, and what the regional travel warnings mean for a trip to Lusail in November 2026.

A grand prix ticket does not get you into Qatar. Nothing on the circuit’s pages, the national tourism site or the Hayya platform offers ticket holders a special visa or a faster route through the airport, so you enter on the same terms as any other visitor. For most fans that is easy. For some it means an application and a hotel booking made in a particular way, and this year it also means reading the travel warnings before you pay for anything else.
This guide is about getting through the border. For the train from the airport to the circuit, read our race day travel guide. For where to sleep, see where to stay.
Three ways in
Visit Qatar, the national tourism board, sorts every visitor into one of three routes. Which one you are on depends on your passport, and sometimes on where you live.
Visa free. Citizens of more than 100 countries can arrive without applying for anything. Visit Qatar notes that this used to be called visa on arrival and that only the name has changed. British passport holders are on this list, and so are United States citizens, who receive a visa valid for two years with stays of up to 90 days each.
Visa on arrival for a fee. Some nationalities pay QAR 100 at the airport. Some of those must also hold a hotel booking made through the Discover Qatar website before they fly. If that applies to you, a room booked anywhere else will not satisfy the rule, so check before you reserve.
Apply before you travel. Everyone else applies on the Hayya platform at hayya.qa or in its app. The tourist visa is called A1, it needs a hotel reservation as part of the application, and Visit Qatar gives the cost as QAR 100, paid once the visa is approved. Separate categories exist for residents of other Gulf states and for people who live in the Schengen area, the UK, the US, Australia, New Zealand or Canada but hold another passport.
Citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE need no visa at all. A passport or Gulf ID card is enough.
The quickest way to find your route is the short questionnaire on Visit Qatar’s visa page, which asks your nationality and residence and points you to the right option. We have not found an official processing time for Hayya applications, so our judgement is to apply as soon as your flights are booked rather than in race week.
The passport rule, and why we would use six months
Visit Qatar says your passport must be valid for at least three months from the day you arrive. The UK Foreign Office says six months. The US State Department page gives three months in one place and six in another.
Our judgement is that an airline will check you against the strictest rule it knows, not the kindest. Our advice is to travel only on a passport with six months left on 27 November 2026, which means valid until at least late May 2027. If yours expires sooner, renewing is a better use of the next four weeks than arguing at a check in desk.
What else to carry
Visit Qatar lists a confirmed return ticket as a requirement for at least one entry route, and the Foreign Office and State Department pages both mention an onward or return ticket. Have it on your phone, along with the hotel booking.
Health insurance is only compulsory for longer stays. The Foreign Office says visitors staying more than 30 days must buy cover from a provider registered with Qatar’s health ministry, at a standard premium of QAR 50 a month. A race trip is shorter than that, but Visit Qatar still recommends cover that works in Qatar’s hospitals, and so do we.
If you take prescription medication, the Foreign Office updated its Qatar guidance on that subject in August 2026. Read it before you pack, because some medicines that are routine at home need paperwork here.
Driving in from Saudi Arabia
Fans from Saudi Arabia, and some from further along the Gulf, drive in through the Abu Samra land border. Hayya runs a vehicle registration service for that crossing, and Visit Qatar describes it as a way to make entry smoother. If you plan to drive, register the car on Hayya before you set off. The drive from Abu Samra to Lusail is long, so our getting there page covers parking at the circuit.
Stopping over on the way somewhere else
If Doha is a stop between flights, Visit Qatar describes a transit visa for travellers with at least six hours at Hamad International Airport, valid for up to four days and arranged at the Discover Qatar transit desk. That is enough for one race day, though not for the full weekend. Visit Qatar is also selling stopover packages for this race that include a grandstand ticket. We have not checked their prices against buying separately.
The travel warnings this year
This is the part that is different in 2026. The State Department says hostilities that began on 28 February caused significant disruption to commercial flights in the region.
The UK Foreign Office updated its Qatar advice on 27 October 2026 with new information about regional tensions. It says the situation remains unpredictable and tells travellers to be ready for flight cancellations and airspace closures at short notice. The US State Department advises Americans to reconsider travel to Qatar, and its embassy in Doha has suspended routine consular services.
Formula 1 said in early October that the season will finish at Lusail and Abu Dhabi as planned, and nothing has changed that since. Our news page follows it daily. The MotoGP round at Lusail on 6 to 8 November comes first, and how that weekend runs is worth watching.
Our judgement on what to do:
- Read your own government’s advice for Qatar, and check it again the week you fly.
- Ask your insurer in writing whether your policy still covers you while your government’s advice stands as it is, and whether it covers cancellation if the race is called off or airspace closes.
- Remember that circuit tickets cannot be refunded or changed, so book flights and hotels you can move or cancel where you can.
- Keep your airline’s app installed and notifications on, because that is usually where you hear about a cancellation first.
What is not known yet
As of 31 October 2026: whether any event specific entry arrangements will be announced for race week, how long Hayya applications are taking, and whether the regional situation will change before 27 November. We will update this guide if any of those move.
